Mortal Kombat in Australia Suffers Another Fatality… But At Least We Are Safe!

Perhaps the most disappointing news this week came in the form of the rejection of new Mortal Kombat game here in Australia after Warner Bros issued an appeal.

As a fan of the franchise, I like many others, was really looking forward to getting my hands on the reboot of my much loved franchise. Now due to Australia’s primitive rating system I will not be able to. Some may say get the game imported, but reports on various sites state that imported games are now being checked for those that have been refused classification. In short one has to ask themselves is it worth the risk?

Mortal Kombat has always been surrounded by controversy. I still remember the reaction to the original and how everyone got up in arms over it’s life like violence and the over the top fatalities. Then the multitude of sequels that followed, each adding a little more gore, until finally it seemed like the franchise had been accepted as the noise stopped. Well at least until the talk of the franchise reboot.

Obviously I have not gotten my hands on a copy, I so wish I did, but from what I have seen in screen shots and previews I can not understand why this one is considered far more violent than any of it’s predecessors?

It would have to be right, to be refused classification?

I personally think the powers to be have finally got their way and put a nail in the coffin of the MK series, but have they hurt the series or hurt themselves?
Let’s face facts, the argument for R18+ ratings for games is a hot topic in the gaming world at the moment and I think the politicians that are not on board for the revision of the rating system are simply cutting there nose off to spite their face.
As the years go on, kids that have grown up with video games, reaching or have reached voting age, and will be passionate about playing the games they choose, and by telling them as adults they can not, well this is not respecting their views.
I know myself that as a voting adult, being told how I can spend my time and what I can or can not hear, see or say is not going to help those who want my vote.

So people in parliament who are stopping games like Mortal Kombat from being in my reach, thank you for protecting me…
Now I’m off to watch A Clockwork Orange whilst listening to NWA and reading Hustler under the influence of a litre of Jack Daniels. Cheers!

Jeri Ryan to Play Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat Rebirth

Web series Mortal Kombat: Rebirth will be joined by Jeri Ryan as emasculating elite femme fatale ass-beater Sonya Blade. The news comes via confirmation from the actress herself that she will reprise the role she played in the trailer to which we were first exposed last summer. (Albeit with no initial explanation as to what it was.) Speculation had the footage as a leaked trailer for the long-reported reboot film for the Mortal Kombat franchise, but it turned out to be concept footage used to persuade Warner Bros to go the ultra-violent route. Continuing on from last summer’s trailer, it was reported last month to officially become a 10 episode web series, which will be directed by Kevin Tancharoen, helmer of the original clip.

As the former Borg vixen, Ryan tweets:

“Heading to the farmer’s market with the hubs & my girl. Then this evening I head to Vancouver to shoot Mortal Kombat! (NOW it’s official)”

Later adding: “BTW, just finished reading the whole script for Mortal Kombat. Holy crap… I think u might just love it. Get ready…”

It’s still sort of perplexing as to why Warner is going the route of a web series, rather than just a movie — or even another TV series. As some may recall, that would not be without precedence with the TV series Mortal Kombat: Conquest, which aired on TNT from 1998-1999, focusing on the ancient era of the tournament with Liu Kang’s ancestor, the original Kung Lao. Perhaps, by bringing in Jeri Ryan (a fairly recognizable name) and possibly Michael Jai White to reprise his role as Jax, it may be an experiment to see how a web series can fare with enough promotional power and talent backing the project.
